Fat Adaption, energy in/energy out and weight management

Many in the low carbohydrate movement say the energy in, energy out equation does not work and ultimately leads to weight gain. This is true for those that are not metabolically flexible and cannot use fat for energy efficiently.

When Fat Adapted, the body will simply use fat for fuel when food is not available. The Fat Adapted don’t get acutely hungry either as energy levels remain stable.

The standard western diet has led most to the consumption of carbs and sugar throughout the day, with no breaks long enough to necessitate the use of fat for energy. High carbohydrate breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner, supper. No break long enough to finish carbohydrate stores and use fat. Over time the ability to use fat for fuel is reduced and then we become totally dependent on regular meals for energy.

When not Fat Adapted, dieting may lead to weight loss, however the constant hunger generally leads to binge eating or up-scaling of portions once the diet completes. This reverses the weight loss and usually leads to net weight gain. When dieting where fat is not available for energy, the metabolism slows as a survival response, slowing weight loss.

The Fat Adapted are metabolically flexible and can use their body fat as the primary fuel when food is not consumed. They do not get acutely hungry and can easily go 16 hours without eating, some 24 hours.
